The difference between filing and planning

Filing is reporting what already happened. When you sit down in March to prepare last year, almost everything is decided: what you billed, what you spent, how you paid yourself. A good preparer keeps you from making mistakes and secures the deductions you documented, but cannot change the year.

Planning is different, and it happens earlier. It is deciding in October whether the S Corp election is worth it, whether to buy the equipment this year or next, what a reasonable salary is, which expenses are worth documenting better. That is where the needle actually moves, and it is the conversation almost nobody has because it only comes up in season.

That is why we work all twelve months. If we keep your books, by January you already know roughly what you will owe and there is still time to act. And if you arrive with years unfiled or an IRS letter in hand, that gets resolved too: we organize it, file what is pending, and negotiate the payment plan that fits.

Preparation or planning

Both services are necessary, but they happen at different points in the year.

Point of comparison Preparation Planning
When it happens January to April, on the closed year. During the year, before it closes.
What can change Nothing about last year; only filing it correctly. Structure, timing of expenses, how you pay yourself.
What you receive A filed return and archived documentation. Decisions made and estimates adjusted.
Who it matters most for Everyone. Anyone billing steadily or growing.
What it needs from you Complete documents, on time. Books kept current through the year.

This page is informational and does not replace advice on your case. The S Corp election, for example, makes sense above a certain profit level and requires putting yourself on payroll.

Frequently asked questions about taxes

I have years I never filed. What do I do?+

It gets resolved, and it is better to resolve it before the IRS does it for you. We review which years are missing, rebuild the information, file the pending returns, and if a balance remains, arrange the payment plan. Coming forward voluntarily always works out better than waiting for the letter.

Can I file taxes without a Social Security number?+

Yes, with an ITIN. It is the number the IRS issues to people who have a filing obligation and do not qualify for a Social Security number. We file the application together with your return and also handle renewals when it expires.

How much does it cost to prepare my return?+

It depends on complexity: how many forms, whether there is a business, whether several states are involved, whether there are back years. At the consultation we give you the fixed number before starting, so no charges appear later.

I received a letter from the IRS. Can you help?+

Yes, and bring the complete letter to the appointment: the notice type determines the deadline and the response. We review what they are asking for, prepare the response, and follow through until the case closes. Do not ignore it; the clock is running.

Is the S Corp election worth it for my company?+

It depends on how much profit you have. An S Corp can reduce self-employment tax, but it requires putting yourself on payroll at a reasonable salary, which adds administrative cost. Above a certain profit level it pays for itself; below that, it does not. We run the numbers with yours.

Are you only open during tax season?+

No. We are open all twelve months, and much of what actually saves tax is decided outside of season: the structure, the timing of purchases, how you pay yourself.
